Why produce training videos

One of the great benefits of making your own training video(s) is that they are a really cost-effective way of managing and tracking your staff & employees’ training. By commissioning your own training video/animation content you can have an almost limitless range of training resources at your fingertips from content on specific instructions as to how to operate a piece of machinery to explaining a new administrative process your business or organisation is adopting.  Alternatively, you could use a training video to induct new members of staff or even on-site visitors to your premises.

Video works

They say ‘A picture is worth a thousand words’, and it’s true. How many times have you found yourself searching on YouTube to find a quick tutorial or ‘a how to’ film rather than read the instruction manual. Learning through video is much easier than reading pages of text. By combining the power of moving images and words, a well-made training video/ training animation can improve the effectiveness of any training you are wanting to deliver to your employees. Multiple studies have shown that video learning is much more effective than all other types of learning. An article published in Psychology Today, Video vs Text, found that “The brain has been shown to process video learning 60,000 times faster than text learning.”

Check knowledge & understanding

When using training videos, you can also build in knowledge checks to ensure participants have taken on board the information correctly. Training video content embedded into a Learning Management System (LMS) can give you additional back-end data on an individual’s performance and their knowledge check scores which can also help with identifying additional training needs as well as providing a training audit.

Higher engagement

Employees will generally learn far more effectively with an engaging training video as it leads to much higher levels of learning retention. Watching training videos or training animations can also generate ‘talking points’ with trainers therefore increasing the effectiveness of face-to-face training programmes. Watching a training video/animation is far more engaging than sitting through a ‘chalk and talk’ training presentation.

Cost effective

If your training content is online then there are big savings to be realised, once your video or animation has been made. It can be viewed multiple times with the messaging and content always staying the same, giving you a guaranteed uniformity of your training materials. Associated costs of traditional training such as venues, training leaders, travel & refreshments are also removed.

Types of Training Videos that we produce

We are able to create training videos and animations on a whole variety of different subjects from the on-site health and safety briefing at a busy central distribution centre (CDC) or a large construction site, through to compulsory staff training programmes. Our training videos will provide a consistent and cost-effective way for you to deliver all your training needs. Whether you’re a charity, public sector organisation or a private/public company, our training video production expertise will ensure we tailor-make your training video content to look on-brand and represent the authoritative & trusted voice of your organisation.

Online training videos and animations are particularly popular with both staff and employers because it’s flexible and accessible, allowing people to self-schedule and learn where and when they choose. And also, by making your own bespoke training video you can design the information to meet your audiences’ specific needs.

Employee Training Videos

Employee training videos are the most popular sort of training videos/ training animations we are asked to make by our clients.  As everyone knows, delivering training in person can be time consuming and expensive, so by using video to train and/or onboard new staff, you’ll not only save time and money but produce a flexible and accurate resource that can be used at any time. And as we keep our clients’ video and animation content for up to 4 years, we can make amendments and any updates to ensure your training resources are kept up to date & accurate.

Scenario Training Videos

Scenario training videos tend to use real-world situations delivered by actors. We’ll make short scripted videos your teams will find relevant and relatable which they can then discuss viable solutions for. This type of training video showcases exactly how they should handle a certain situation. For example, how to deal with an accident at work, a dissatisfied customer or managing difficult situations in the workplace such as a dispute between colleagues.

Process Update Training Videos

We live in a fast-changing world with technology, regulations and best practice changing all the time. Training videos & animations are an ideal way to ensure that everyone is up to date with the latest skills, processes and information from your company/organisation.

Training Video Production Process

Before filming commences, we will have agreed the script in advance, the training scenarios we wish to explore, as well as the learning take-out as well as any potential contributors that are needed or even the casting of actors for the training video. The workflow for a training animation is slightly different, but always starts with the script to ensure the animation will capture all the training and information you wish to impart. Please see our section on how we work to find out about the different production stages between live action filming & animation production.

Educational Video Production

Both Directors of Picture Lock Films have worked in the production of formal education resources, making and commissioning curriculum-relevant content for Key Stages 1-4.  Moray also led BBC Education’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic producing both secondary and primary content for BBC Bitesize. We have also worked with clients who have their own in-house study and qualifications programmes for their industry/s. We have helped develop their learning resources, providing video and animation content to support both remote and face to face learning.  We understand learning journeys and how to make often hard or complicated subjects into engaging content. We also have experience of working with educational consultants and curriculum experts to ensure the content we produce has proper learning take-out as well as equipping students & learners with an appropriate level of understanding to enable them to further their studies.

What’s the difference between training video production and educational video production?

Training videos and Education videos are similar yet different in many ways. We like to think that a training video or animation will help in the process of skills development – learning new information, a process or how to operate safely in the workplace. The goal for any specific training video content is to learn how to perform a specific skill or behaviour correctly for an employee to undertake their job role. On the other hand, an education video tends to help with the systematic process of learning something with the goal of acquiring knowledge by following a course syllabus or curriculum with a specific testing regime in place that awards a recognised qualification. But as with everything in life they’ll be exceptions to this rule, for example, passing a driving test is an informal piece of learning but has it a rigorous training programme to follow plus a testing regime.

We have worked with many amazing people and companies over the years, here is what they have to say about working with us.

Training & Educational Video FAQs

We will take care of everything that’s needed to make you an effective training video or animation, starting with scripting and planning, producing animation storyboards to finding locations and even casting actors, if any are needed. In the budget we will have allocated all the crew and the camera kit needed, as well as the editing & sound design for animation. All our costs are calculated on the days required to deliver your training video/ animation. Again, all this will have been discussed at our discovery & proposal stage of our corporate film making process. As an approximate guide: Animation and Infographic content can cost upwards of £750 to £2500 per minute (this will depend on the nature and complexity of the animation required.) Live action filming can start from between £550/£1000 upwards per minute. (A minimum minutage to achieve this sort of cost per minute figure would be content that’s 3 minutes and above).

We can guide you through the whole process from start to finish. Our aim is to take your training ‘need’ and to devise content to tell this in the most compelling and imaginative way possible.

The scripting process is one of many elements of the creative process that we take care of and deliver with your help and input. Any script we produce will make sure your message makes sense to your audience and they will understand the training.

Alternatively, if you already have an outline script, we will be really happy to take this forward, but as part of the pre-production stage  we will go through it with our producer and director hat on, to ensure it will all work visually and is achievable for your budget.

What some of our clients like to do is map out what they see the content of their training videos or animations being and we will devise the script around this outline.

We’re experienced in developing effective and engaging ways to translate training materials through the medium of video and animation. The duration will depend on the training that needs delivering. As a general rule, taking into consideration the audience and the learning environment, it’s best to deliver training content in bitesize chunks. 4-6 minutes is a good starting point but we can tailor to whatever your requirements are. For instance we can take a long video and /or training animation and divide the content into separate parts for maximum learning and retention.

It’s cost effective – make it once and use it as many times as you like.

It’s flexible – people can watch it at work, at home or even on the move.

It’s memorable – people find it easier to take in and retain information that’s presented in a visual format. According to elearningindustry.com, a learner is likely to remember only 10% of textual content, 65% of visual content, but 95% of audio-visual content.

The simple answer is yes and often animation works better to explain complicated concepts. At your discovery phase, we will have discussed the best format options for your training content to be made in.

Live action filming can take place at your organisation’s premises as we will be show-casing real-world examples in your workplace. Where appropriate we can also film in a studio and / use VR. Virtual Reality is a very cost-effective way of creating multiple location sets in the one location. Find out more about using VR in your next training video in our VR filming blog post

Once production is completed, we usually keep the project and the media for up to 4 years. Let’s say you’ve had a rebrand or need to make some changes to keep your training videos up to date — so long as it’s within that 4 year period, we would definitely be able to accommodate your changes/updates. (However, an additional cost would apply).
