Recruitment Videos

What is a recruitment video?

A recruitment film is just the job to attract the best candidates for either your company’s vacancies or apprentice / graduate trainee schemes. Our recruitment video production process will ensure your recruitment video or animation gives potential applicants an idea of whether they’re a good fit for your company and job role you’re recruiting for. To do this we’ll use a combination of moving images, text, audio, music and voiceover – should your recruitment film require it – to create a memorable and effective recruitment video that will motivate and inspire the best candidates to apply.

The best recruitment videos act like an advert for your company, but instead of shining a spotlight on the benefits your company/organisation brings to its customers -everyday – we will be turning the cameras on you; and what your business or organisation can offer to any new employee.

In just a few minutes, the recruitment video/ animation Picture Lock Films will make for you should answer the top 5 questions that most job candidates will have:

  • What does your company do?
  • What’s your work culture and shared values amongst your staff?
  • What kind of person succeeds at your company/ organisation?
  • Why should I work for your company over a competitor?
  • What opportunities are there for my career progression?

Why create a recruitment video?

As a recruiter, you will be looking to attract and bring the most qualified candidates to work at your company. But with an increasingly skilled, competitive and discerning workforce the old ways of recruitment – e.g., placing an ad or a social media post – often won’t get the best applicants applying.

Research shows that video content generates higher audience engagement compared to other forms of content. Research by the UK job site Monster found that job postings with videos receive over 38% more applications.  By commissioning a well-produced recruitment video, you can effectively attract and inspire the right candidates to apply.

Unfortunately, while it’s a requirement to produce a long job description with lengthy paragraphs these types of ads can be a turn-off to many job hunters. So, it’s not a surprise that the most attractive job ads – which incidentally tend to receive more applications – are engaging, expressive and have personality. That’s why recruitment videos have become for businesses, both large and small, an essential part of the recruiters’ tool kit.

So, if you want to attract and hire top talent, you need to create content that excites and engages with your potential field of candidates. And that content is video, for that you’ll need recruitment video ideas and that’s where Picture Lock Films can help.

Recruitment video examples

We have made multiple recruitment films over the past decade. We were commissioned to make video content on career progression and recruitment opportunities for the BBC when they relocated some of its programmes and production departments to Salford’s, MediaCityUK. These recruitment and promotional videos showcased career opportunities, entry level schemes, job swaps and shadowing case studies.

Also, we have worked closely with one our regular clients, Edmundson Electrical, to supply recruitment films for use on their dedicated recruitment website.

How do you make a recruitment video?

The great thing about recruitment videos is they can be made in live action, animation or filmed in VR (virtual reality). We can even use testimonial interviews from employees to create animations using their original audio. Literally there are dozens of ways to make your recruitment film to ensure it ticks all your boxes. At Picture Lock Films we don’t have a ‘one size fits all’ philosophy when it comes to making eye-catching recruitment videos and animations. At our discovery stage we will have found out what is important to you, what your key messages are. And then armed with this information we will think about the best ways to tell your story to attract the best candidates for the roles you are recruiting for.

For us, the best recruitment films are the ones that feel the most authentic. They feature real, current footage of your employees in the workplace.   This will also help capture your audience’s attention from the beginning. However, we don’t tend to reveal too much information at once. Instead, providing just enough to grab the viewer’s interest to keep them engaged and to keep them watching.

Once we have the viewer’s attention, we need to maintain it. To do this, we can use all sorts of filming & editing techniques that will help with the pacing and flow to your recruitment video. We will incorporate different & visually interesting camera shots, lock-offs, time-lapse sequences plus all the usual cutaways that will enhance the information being talked about in your recruitment film. Also ensuring there’s great sound quality! As poor sound is why so many people switch off from watching recruitment videos. At Picture Lock Films we always think of the sound quality as well as the picture quality.

Candidates typically watch recruitment videos for around 1-2 minutes this will be influenced by how interesting and appealing they are, as such we typically recommend to keeping recruitment films & animations around the 2-3 minutes mark. You may also want to consider adding subtitles.

What should a recruitment video include?

Who you are and what you do?

A brief introduction to your company, what do you do? Highlighting your history/pedigree, your success as well as future growth opportunities. Ask yourself who might be best placed to deliver this information. It is a senior team member or are you happy for this information to come from employee led interviews? Or would you like a voiceover script to help deliver some of the key information in your recruitment film? Alternatively we can use on screen text to ‘land’ these key messages.

Current employees

Think about suitable candidates from across your business who would be happy to appear on camera and to be interviewed about their experiences. Usually, we need at least 3 employees of different backgrounds and job roles, each giving a concise explanation of their job role and what their job entails. Including what they like about your company, the work culture, your values and the opportunities.

The working environment

If appropriate, a tour of the main business areas & key function at your company’s location explaining the role they play in the wider organisation. Or if you have multiple sites of operation, would you like them included in the film or a map graphic making to show where your operational bases are.

Call to action

There should be clear call to action of how applicants can apply or find out more. It is also worth thinking about were you're likely to be using the video to ensure the call to action is appropriate and easy to follow. For example use a short and easy to remember web link or email address if there will be no clickable route to follow.

We can support you every step of the way when creating a recruitment video. We will work with you to understand your business and recruitment goals to create a video that really hits the mark. Testimonials

We have worked with many amazing people and companies over the years, here is what they have to say about working with us.

recruitment video production FAQs

The most effective recruitment videos are centred around people, your teams are the best people to sell the business to potential new candidates. In the recruitment film we’ll find out what inspires employees to work at your company and what motivates them to come into work every day. There are many ways to make an engaging recruitment video but we will have discussed the most appropriate options prior to filming commencing. We may choose to set the video at a company event, or a product launch. Or we could come and film on a normal work day. Any of these scenarios will allow us to showcase your business, and to highlight your values, culture, with employee interviews. Also, as many recruitment videos are watched on the daily commute or even in the workplace! They may be watched without sound therefore we would recommend adding subtitles to your finished recruitment film. Research shows 46% of visits to recruitment websites or job searching is done on mobile devices.

A recruitment video can help you stand out and differentiate yourselves from competitors. A well-made recruitment film can capture what life is like at your business/organisation.  Video is a powerful recruitment tool that allows you to show prospective employees what it’s like to work for your company. Additionally, it is very good at describing often intangible aspects of the workplace in an easy and digestible way; as the saying goes, a picture paints a thousand words. By commissioning your own recruitment video you can carefully target your messaging to outline the perfect candidate profile you wish to attract. This approach can also help ‘bad-fit’ candidates to self-select themselves out of the application process in the first place. Thus, potentially saving you time going through unsuitable applications.  Also, candidates can work out for themselves from the video if they would actually fit into your business/organisation. If they feel they would not fit in /enjoy the role then they probably won’t apply; again this will save you time in the recruitment process.

The costs for your recruitment video will be entirely governed by the ambition & scale of your project plus the locations. Needless to say, we will be as cost effective as possible and look to achieve any economies of scale ensuring we deliver value for money for your recruitment film. All our costs are calculated on the days required to deliver your recruitment video; and because we normally work on a day rate basis we can, in most incidents, provide clients with more than one live action film. Recruitment films tend to be shorter by their nature. On past projects we have been able to get sufficient material – in one day’s filming – to provide clients with 3-4 separate recruitment films. As an approximate guide: Animation and Infographic content can cost upwards of £750 to £2500 per minute (this will depend on the nature and complexity of the animation required.) Live action filming can start from between £550/£1000 upwards per minute. (A minimum minutage to achieve this sort of cost per minute would be needed; as an approximate guide any content that’s above three minutes.) As with any promotional /corporate video costs are dependent on the locations/ travel/ camera equipment needed/ length of filming needed to get the content and the number of days needed for all the editing etc.

A recruitment video will get the job done as it is an exciting way to engage and connect with candidates and to stand out from the competition, who may be still working exclusively with text-based company descriptions and job ads.  As already highlighted, a recruitment video allows you to communicate so many points in an instant; like your company values & culture, the attitudes of your workforce, the work environment, the calibre of talent you’re seeking to hire, and much more.

Research by Grabjobs analysed 12 months of their job application data, they concluded that companies using a recruitment video to support their job posts get 3x more applicants.

Also, once you have made your recruitment video you can reuse and repurpose your videos almost for the foreseeable future. We can do this by re-editing the original video by making cut downs to create shorter clips for use on social media platforms. Whatever your recruitment video is, we will ensure you will get the maximum return from any content investment you make.
